In a deal worth $6 billion, Brazilian low-cost carrier Gol is to purchase 60 of its new 737 Max aircraft. With delivery due to begin in 2018, these new plans will be as much as 13 percent more fuel efficient than Gol’s existing fleet. The cost savings this will generate are vital to a company that is currently seeking to return to profitability.
As air passenger numbers have risen dramatically in Brazil in recent years, as the country’s economy has grown strongly, Gol has increasing fought to compete against larger rivals, while at the same time combating the effects of high fuel prices.
Currently flying to 63 Brazilian destinations, as well as to 12 other South American and Caribbean countries, the decision to order 60 of Boeing’s 737 Max aircraft is in line with its commitment to maintain a safe, modern fleet.
